Summer is well and truly here in Okinawa, with the temperatures rising and the sun shining.  Checked the weather report at 9am this morning and was told that it was 31°C but that it felt “like 36°C”.  Thankfully the humidity was only 70% and a sea breeze coming through my apartment managed to keep me [...]

Nice Slow-motion Video of Drag Race Launches

Posted By Dave on November 7th, 2009

This might only be of limited appeal to those who read the articles I post, but I thought this was cool and worth writing about.  As the more perceptive of you may know, one of my current passions is cars, despite having absolutely no luck with them in the past 12 months.  But when I have a car that will move under its own power, I like drag racing.

One of the most vital points of the drag race is the launch, and it’s easy for people who haven’t done it to underestimate how much there is to think about.  Staging, getting the rpms held just right, keeping the clutch and gas at the right points so you don’t wheelspin or bog… it really is a hell of a lot, and the quicker the car the more you have to think about.  But the launch itself lasts a fraction of a second and then it’s onto flying through the gears and heading for the finish line.

This video that I came across on one of the forums I frequent shows those fractions of a second, but slowed down so you can really see what happens to the car.  Even if you’re not into racing, it’s still a pretty cool video to watch.  If you are into racing, it’s fascinating to analyse the launches and what is or is not going right.

You might have seen elsewhere on this site the latest gymkhana video by US rally driver, Ken Block.  You might have even downloaded the HD version of that video.  But here I’d like to take a moment to show you the original video which spawned this sequel.  This original had less of an MTV feel to it and quite a few people on the internet are saying they prefer it.  I’ll leave you to make up your minds on that one.

Once again, I will offer 2 options to view this video.  You can see it streaming from Youtube below, or you can follow the link at the bottom of this post and download an avi version of the video.  Enjoy.

Ken Block Gymkhana 2 Video (Some Amazing Driving here)

Posted By Dave on June 2nd, 2009

It’s not often I post up Youtube videos, but I will give credit to people with talent and this guy certainly has it in abundance.  Ken Block, a rally driver from the States and also the founder of DC Shoes has just released his latest gymkhana video/infomercial.  For the uninitiated, gymkhana is also called autocross and basically involves technical driving around a small course with tight turns and is something that is easy to do but hard to do well.  What this guy does in his 2009 Subaru Impreza STi is something pretty amazing, I’m sure you’ll agree.

What do you think?  If you’re not impressed then you are a hard person to please!  Even if you’re not a fan of the crazy driving like that, you’ve got to admit he’s got some talent.  Would love to see an outtakes video though!
